Knowledge as a driver: Wageningen and Ede strengthen their agri‑food ecosystem

  • 17 March 2026

A powerful economic boost

The agri‑food knowledge ecosystem in Wageningen and Ede makes a significant contribution to the regional economy. Decisio examined the precise economic value of this ecosystem. The region stands out due to its high concentration of knowledge institutions, innovative companies, and a young, international population. Wageningen University & Research serves as an international brand, attracting talent and businesses from across the globe. More than half of the region’s start‑ups were founded by international students, underscoring its innovative character.

Using an Input/Output model, Decisio calculated the economic impact. In 2023, 230 companies and institutions were active in the ecosystem, accounting for 8,800 FTEs and €1.3 billion in production. Direct revenues from property taxes amounted to approximately €2.5 million annually in Wageningen and €0.7 million in Ede. Indirectly, sectors such as business services and rental activities also benefited, bringing the total impact to nearly 13,000 FTEs.

Future‑proof, but not without challenges

The outlook is positive: by 2040, the ecosystem could grow to between 13,000 and 17,100 FTEs. Further growth will require space for businesses, improved accessibility, and strengthened collaboration between knowledge institutions and industry. At the same time, challenges such as limited expansion space and grid capacity call for careful attention to ensure sustainable development of the ecosystem.
