Design Academy Eindhoven enriches the design sector in Eindhoven

  • 17 March 2026

Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) is a higher education institution located in the municipality of Eindhoven. The diverse contribution made by DAE and its students is of great importance to the city and the region. In addition, DAE’s presence in Eindhoven positively influences key drivers of regional economic growth, such as innovation, knowledge exchange, talent development and entrepreneurship. In 2027, the academy intends to relocate to a new site within Eindhoven’s design cluster. The municipality of Eindhoven is considering whether, and to what extent, it wishes to support this relocation through the municipal budget. To inform this decision, the municipality has asked Decisio to provide insight into the broad economic value of DAE for the city and the region.

DAE Accounts for 251 Jobs

In 2022, DAE generated a total economic impact of 251 jobs (FTEs) and represented nearly €50 million in production value and €27.5 million in added value. This impact includes not only personnel costs and the academy’s procurement of goods and services from suppliers, but also the spending by DAE employees and students. It also includes the expenditures of visitors to Dutch Design Week (DDW) related to DAE. Approximately three‑quarters of the total number of jobs, production value and added value accrued within Eindhoven in 2022.

* The direct economic effect of DAE in Eindhoven is equal to its total economic effect, as all impacts occur within the city.

DAE enriches the design sector and Eindhoven’s business climate

DAE also contributes implicitly to the municipality’s economy by enhancing the local business climate. It provides a positive boost to the design sector and the regional attractiveness of Eindhoven, although this contribution alone is not decisive for the city’s overall economic success. Nevertheless, the absence of DAE in Eindhoven would be a loss for the design ecosystem. Moreover, Eindhoven’s reputation as a design city would suffer if DAE were to relocate elsewhere.
