Decisio developed, on behalf of the Amsterdam Transport Region and in collaboration with app and web developer ASD Apps, a calculation tool that allows employers to assess the financial impact of cycling on their organisation. The employer tool shows that cycling to work is not only good for the environment, but also for the bottom line. An organisation with 20 employees who cycle to work — 60% of whom use an e‑bike — saves nearly €5,000 per year. The biggest gains come from reduced absenteeism and higher productivity. Employees and society also benefit significantly, with annual gains of €4,000 and over €1,500 respectively.
Employees who cycle are generally more active, leading to lower disease burden and longer life expectancy. This translates into €200 in benefits per employee per year. The tool clearly shows how vitality and mobility reinforce one another — a powerful argument for employers to encourage cycling.
The tool also calculates environmental benefits. With an average cycling distance of 8 km and four cycling days per week, this results in a CO₂ reduction of 3 tonnes. This corresponds to €500 in societal benefits — a concrete and compelling figure for sustainability policies.
The tool is now available on the Breikers website and offers not only the calculation tool but also an e‑bike trial scheme and a cycling scan with report. This means insights can be directly translated into action. For employers in North Holland, this is both cost‑free and effective. Decisio sees this as a powerful instrument to support and accelerate mobility policy.
