Bicycle export: more than economic value

  • 20 March 2026

The export of the Dutch bicycle sector — and the export of our cycling culture — delivers not only economic gains but also substantial societal benefits. Research by Decisio shows that Dutch cycling companies such as Swapfiets and Lease a Bike generate hundreds of millions of euros in societal value abroad each year. This includes healthier populations, reduced emissions and more socially connected living environments. The export of Dutch expertise and policy, for example through the European CIVITAS Handshake project, also contributes structurally to more sustainable cities.

Impact of Dutch cycling companies

Companies such as Swapfiets and Lease a Bike operate across Europe. Their international activities lead to a modal shift: more people choose the bicycle instead of the car or public transport. This generates nearly €300 in societal benefits per user per year, including health gains, reduced congestion, lower emissions and more liveable cities.

Dutch cycling expertise as an export product

Through projects such as CIVITAS Handshake, Dutch cities and experts share their knowledge with European partner cities. This has resulted in a 28% increase in cycling in the areas where measurements were taken. The societal value is estimated at more than €150 million over 30 years, with the Dutch contribution estimated at at least €50 million.
